Hatching and Crosshatching
To
hatch, draw lines parallel to each other. The distance between the
parallel lines determines how dark the area appears. Our eyes optically
mix the lines. If they are close together they appear darker; further
apart, lighter.
Crosshatching is as it sounds, lines cross over each
other to produce shading. 
Contour
hatching brings shading to organic forms.
