How do you describe the subject matter of an art work?

Activity A.  Students will describe “American Gothic” by Grant Wood.  Teacher will project image of painting onto large screen.  Students will take turns telling what they see in the painting. H.2.1

 Activity B.  Students will choose a reproduction of a painting and write a description of the people, places, things the artist has included in the painting .  They will use complete sentences with correct grammar and spelling.  Tell all the facts; no opinions at this time, please. Include everything you can see, including the time of day, time of year, colors of objects. H.14.2

Materials:  Art reproductions, paper, pencil.

Evaluation:  Writing will be evaluated according to creativity. mechanics (spelling, grammar) and attention to detail.
