Lesson 4:  What is a relief print?  How do you make a relief print?  How can artists use drawings to create a new composition?  What style of art used relief printmaking to create expressive self portraits?

Activity A.  Students will study German Expressionist relief prints to see examples of expressive images in black and white.  They will view slides and look at examples in books. H.2.1

Activity B.  Students will watch a demonstration of how to make and print a relief print. Students will use a digital photograph of themselves to create a strong black and white, high contrast, image, which can be transferred to a 4 x 6" plate.  H.7.2, H.7.3

Activity C.  Students will carve the plate.  Students will print their plate, creating an artist’s proof and an edition of two prints. H.9.1, H.11.1, H.14.2

Handout:  Relief print handout.

Materials:  Paper, roller ball and ball point pens, tracing paper, cutting tools, 4 x 6” rubber plate, ink, printing paper, small etching press.
