Lesson 3:  What are some techniques used to make drawings
with interesting shapes?

Activity A.  Students will draw a still life arrangement of a ladder, stools, and chair by drawing the negative shapes – the holes in the ladder, stools, and chair – to create an interesting composition.  Draw shadows by drawing the lighter shapes around them in order to “trap” shadows. H.7.1, H.8.2, H.9.1

After completing the “holes” in the ladder, stools, and chair, students will complete all missing lines and shade the drawing.  They will use 8-10 different values to shade drawing.

Materials:  Drawing paper, soft-leaded pencils, a ladder, stools, chair arranged in front of white paper covering board that is approximately 6’ x 4’.   Overhead transparencies will be used to explain and demonstrate how to “trap positive shapes”.

Evaluation:  Drawings will be evaluated according to creativity and mechanics (drawing the negative shapes and not the positive ones; use of shading techniques, especially pencil control.)
