Unit 1: From Historical to Contemporary

Unit Objectives:  

Students will learn

  •  about prehistoric ceramics

  1. which countries produced which kinds of forms

  2. the purposes of the forms

  3. how the forms were made

  • what contemporary means and look at examples of contemporary forms

  • how to design a contemporary form

 

Unit 2:  Glazemaking

Unit Objectives: 

 Students will learn how to

  • make their own glazes

  • create a triaxial blend to produce a variety of colors

Unit 3: Precolumbian Zoomorphic Vessels

Unit Objectives: 

 Students will learn 

  • the meaning of zoomorphic

  • about different kinds of zoomorphic forms and their decoration

  • to create their own zoomorphic pots

 

Unit 4: Mugs and Jugs in the Greek Style

Unit Objectives:

Students will learn

  • about Greek ceramic forms and styles of decoration

  • to create a mug and jug forms inspired by Greek styles

  • to decorate using engobe and sgraffito

Unit 5: Visits to Museum Collection of Ceramics and a Local Potter

Unit Objectives:  Students will learn 

  • about the history of ceramics

  • the lifestyle of a potter

  • campus life and the fine arts department

 

Unit 6: Korean Punch'ong Plates

Unit Objectives:  Students will learn 

  • about Korean ceramics

  • to throw or hand build a plate

  • to decorate the plate using the punch'ong technique

 

Unit 7: Slab Work

Unit Objectives:  Students will learn 

  • about Han Burial Houses

  • to construct using slabs

  • to decorate using maiolica techniques

 

Unit 8: Slab Work

Unit Objectives:  Students will learn 

  • about Maiolica glaze

  • to construct using slabs

  • to decorate using maiolica techniques

 

Unit 9: Novelty Tea Pots

Unit Objectives:  Students will learn 

  • about Bernard Leach

  • to throw or hand build a teapot, including all extensions

  • to meaning of novelty

 

Unit 10: Final Four

Unit Objectives:  Students will choose a final project either from the following ideas or from their own idea 

  • a box to hold a precious object

  • a pot showing tension

  • chess pieces

  • interlocking pots
