Pre-Columbian Pottery

There are two features common to pre-columbian pottery: all were made with the coiling method or by using molds, and they were decorated using engobes or colored slips. Glazes were not known.

The people of Mesoamerica had diverse pantheons with an almost bewildering number of deities. These gods and goddesses were associated with natural phenomena with emphasis given to the earth, celestial bodies, fire and water. As an agricultural people, special attention was given to the earth itself as it was believed to be the origin of humanity. Mesoamerican people paid homage to the sacred earth, interring their dead within its confines, ritually making supplication to it. These offerings ranged from human sacrifice to miniature effigies and exotic materials.

The form and design of pottery made by individual groups of people reflect their different aspects of life.  Many pots were painted with, or had modeled onto them aspects of contemporary life, from eating and hunting scenes to courtship and punishment.  Many included images of, or were in the form of animals. H.1.2
