Glazemaking

Unit Objectives:

 Students will learn how to

  • make their own glazes

  • create a triaxial blend to produce a variety of colors

Activity A.  Divide into pairs and make 20 clay tiles (2 1/2 x 3" each).  Make a line halfway down the tile.  Put a texture on the bottom half of the tile.

Activity B.  Make four separate batches of base glaze, putting each into separate yoghurt containers labeled A, B, C, D.  To each container add a different colorant in an amount on which both students agree.  Write down the name of the colorant and the percentage used on each container.  For example, 2% copper. Add water to each container, one tablespoon at time until the consistency is like milk.  Stir thoroughly and put through sieve if possible. H.11.1

Activity C. Label the tiles A, B, C, D, A + B, A + C, A + D and so on.  Brush the glaze evenly on both halves, then a second coat on one half, and a third on a corner.

Activity D. After the tiles are fired, make a display on a piece of painted board.  Include labels with all relevant information.
