Coiled Pots
Objectives:
Students will learn how to coil clay and different ways of decorating
with coils. They will learn about Japanese Tea Containers. H.1.2

Lesson two:
tea container
Teacher
will:

demonstrate
coiling methods and ways to make a lid and
§
show
examples of several ways to make tea bowl and foot
Students will:
§
draw
sketch of tea container you want to coil
§
knead
clay to remove air bubbles and condition clay to personal preference
§
complete
a tea container with a lid; it may be a thin-tea or thick-tea style.
Make sure walls are thin and surface smooth.
Activity
B: Decorate the coiled forms with a variety of techniques: smoothed coils,
exposed coils, corrugated coils, meandering coils, impressed coils, and so on.
Use at lease two techniques. H.9.1

Clay, wooden tools, sgraffito tools, slip, wooden boards
