Slab pots

Objectives:  Students will learn to make three slab plates.  They will learn a variety of decorating techniques, including paper resist, slip trailing, and sgraffito through slip.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 Lesson three: slab plates and cups

      Teacher will:

  •       demonstrate slab methods

  •       show examples of several ways to make plates using several different decorating techniques.

Students will:

§          draw sketch of plate and cup

§          knead clay to remove air bubbles and condition clay to personal preference

§          plate must have surface decoration using paper resist, slip trailing, and sgraffito.  Cup must have texture, fluting, faceting, or painted design.

      

Activity A.  Make a small plate with a stamped design. H.9.1 

 

Activity B.  Make a larger place with handles.  Place cloth, leaves, or other material over clay before you roll the slab.  Place the slab in a slump mold.  Attach handles. H.9.1

 

Activity C.  Make a plate with an outer shape that matches the designs on the surface.  Decorate using paper resist, sgraffito, and slip trailing. H.9.1, H.1.2

             

Materials:  Clay, wooden tools, sgraffito tools, slip, wooden boards

Evaluation:  grade will be determined by  the following criteria:

quality of form:  30
quality of details: 30
overall appearance: 30
quality of decorations
