Activities:

Every pot that students make should use one of the following techniques.  Examples and descriptions are found in the Encyclopedia of Ceramics Techniques, which is with the other ceramics books in the room.  Please read about your chosen technique and look for examples in Ceramics Monthly

applique decorative pieces of clay that are applied to the surface of a pot or art work
engobe a prepared slip that is halfway between a glaze and a clay; contains clay, feldspar, flint, a flux, plus colorants; can be applied to damp ware and bisque ware
faceted a form of surface treatment in which the sides of the pots are cut with a sharp knife or cheese cutter to produce facets
fluted a form of surface treatment in which grooves are cut around the sides of a pot to make it appear like an architectural column
impressing to press a texture into clay
incising to draw lines into clay with a sharp tool
sgraffito decoration produced by scratching lines of a design through a surface layer of engobe which reveals the clay below
slip painting decorating with engobe or slip by painting directly on clay
slip trailing to draw lines of slip onto the surface of clay using an applicator with a tip; elaborate drawings are possible.
texture patterns designs pressed or scratched into moist clay by a variety of small articles such as nails and combs
