Unit 1:  What is clay?

 Unit Objectives: 

  • Students will learn how clay is formed.

  • Students will learn the three properties of clay.

  • Students will learn about three kinds of clay.

 

Unit 2:  What techniques do we use with clay?

Unit Objectives: 

 Students will learn four hand-building techniques

  1. modeling

  2. pinching

  3. coiling

  4. slabbing

 

Unit 3:  How do you make extensions?

Unit Objectives: 

 Students will learn to make handles, spouts, lids

  • a lidded jug

 

Unit 4:  What are some decorating techniques for clay?

Unit Objectives:

 Students will learn decorating techniques:

applique incising
engobe sgraffito
faceted slip painting
fluted slip trailing
glaze texture patterns
glazing wax resist
impressing

 

Unit 5:  How do you throw pots on the electric wheel?

Unit Objectives:  Students will learn to 

  • throw bowl and cylinder forms on the electric wheel

  • decorate each form they make

 

 

Unit 6:  Working Independently

Unit Objectives:  Students will learn to 

  • work independently on at least three projects

  • use greater complexity of form and decoration with each new pot they make
