How do you make pots on the electric wheel?

Unit Objectives:

 Students will learn to throw several different kinds of forms on the electric wheel; how to trim and decorate pots on the wheel.

Activities:       

  1. watch the video "The Cult of the Slow Wheel", complete a video quiz H.11.1 

  2. watch a demonstration about throwing on the wheel and read pages 73-89 in the textbook H.11.1

  3. spend a minimum of three days learning to use the electric wheel H.9.1 

  4. make cylinder and bowl forms, using a variety of tools and techniques H.9.1 

  5. learn to trim the bottoms of the pots H.9.1 

  6. learn decorating techniques to use on the electric wheel H.9.1 

 

Materials:  Clay, throwing sticks, trimming tools, sponges, needle tool, ribs, electric wheel

Materials, Handouts:  video "Cult of the Slow Wheel", typical throwing faults

Evaluation:  grade will be determined by  the following criteria:

willingness to keep trying:  25
listening to directions: 25
quality of forms: 25
quality of trimming:
