CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT (CNA)
COURSE INFORMATION
A high-demand
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course is scheduled to start soon
at the Brown County Career Resource Center (CRC). The course will be
provided by Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana, Columbus Campus.
Registration is now open and we encourage you to act quickly to
reserve a place in the program. Class size is limited to 12
students.

The CNA
class will meet on Monday, Wednesday,
Friday, &
Monday, November 14, 16, 18, & 21, 2011,
The class
will be held at the Career Resource Center for the first four sessions, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Clinicals
will be held at Brown County Health and Living Community,
Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays, 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., November
28 - December 14.
- To
register for the course, you must complete an Ivy Tech
application and an Ivy Tech registration form. Call
the CRC at (812) 988-5880 to schedule an appointment to
register.
- The CNA
course is a 5-credit Ivy Tech course ($107.80 per credit hour +
$60 technology fee, for a total of $599.00). Full payment to Ivy
Tech is due by November 4, two weeks prior to the beginning of
class. The cost of this class does not include the $75.00
for the Certification Examination. If space is still available
after November 4, additional students may register, but they must
pay in full on the day they register. Payment arrangements are
not available for the CNA class.
- If you
pay for the CNA program yourself, you may be eligible for
tuition reimbursement from your employer after you obtain a job
as a CNA.
- You must
use your legal name, not a nickname or middle name, on the
registration form.
- You must
have a physical exam and resulting statement from a physician
indicating that you are capable of lifting 50 pounds. Dr. Tim
Alward M.D. has agreed to provide physical exams for CNA
students for $10.00. Call (812) 988-6141 to schedule an
appointment. You will also need to contact the CRC at (812)
988-5880 before going to your scheduled appointment.

You
must complete a two-step Mantoux test (tuberculosis test) before
you will be allowed in the classroom and at the clinical site.
The initial TB test will be administered, and then it will be
read 72 hours later. You will need to have a second TB test
within 14-21 days after the first test, and, once again, it will
be read 72 hours later. Both phases of the test must be
completed prior to starting class. Only a current TB test will
be accepted. Use only the form provided to you by Ivy
Tech Community College of Indiana.
The Brown County Health
Department charges $5.00 for each Mantoux test. Call (812) 988-2255 to schedule an appointment.
- You must
provide a copy of your birth certificate (no exceptions).
- A
criminal background check and drug test is required prior to the start of the
classroom portion
of the course. You must go on the website,
certifiedbackground.com,. The cost is $99.00. For
complete instructions, pick up a packet at the CRC.
- You will
need to purchase a
Blood Pressure (B/P) kit. These are available at the Ivy Tech
Bookstore. Blood Pressure Kits (includes
cuff) are also available at TJ Uniform (812-526-5315), Uniforms
Unique (812-372-6373) or you can order online at
www.welchallyn.com/medical (phone number: 315-685-4100).
- You will
need at least one set of hunter green scrubs before you
begin your clinical experience. (check Goodwill)
- You must
complete at least 40 hours of classroom/ lab time and 80 hours
of clinical experience in a long-term care facility approved by
the Indiana State Department of Health. In order to
pass the CNA class you MUST attend all classroom and clinical
time.
- The
Certification Examination is conducted by Ivy Tech Community
College. The cost is $75.00 and includes both skills test and a
written test. The cost of this test was not included in the
price of the CNA class. This exam will be administered after you
have (1) completed the entire course, which consists of 80
clinical hours and 40 hours of classroom/ lab training for a
total of 120 hours, and (2) paid the $75.00 fee (payable by
money order only to Ivy Tech). No applications or money orders
will be accepted until all paperwork has been completed and
turned in. It is your responsibility to submit all necessary
paperwork to the instructor.
- A review
session will be held prior to testing. Students who attend the
review session typically perform better on the state licensing
test than those who do not attend.
